Bengals Strike Twice - 2016 YSBA Select Champs
Bantam & PeeWee1 Bengals are 2016 YSBA Select Champs
Our Bengals have brought home 2 YSBA's Dvisional Championships this year - out of the 3 divisions we compete within.
The Toronto Blue Jays aren’t the only local baseball team atop their divisional standings. Our very own Orangeville Home Hardware Bantam Bengals are garnering some attention as they continue to set a torrid pace during the season. After dropping their first York Simcoe Baseball Association game of the season in May, the young titans posted 15 wins and 1 tie over their remaining league contests. Their successful regular season earned them the top seed in the YSBA playdowns which took place from August 12-14 in Collingwood. The Bengals opened the tournament with a decisive win over the Vaughn Vikings. Pearse Murphy and Carter Giles sparked the offence in this game as each player enjoyed a multi-hit game. With the victory, the squad faced Markham in the second round. Although the Bengals fell behind early in this match up, a key hit by Andrew Reynolds tied things up in the bottom half of the first inning. Orangeville scored 4 unanswered runs and went on to a 6-2 victory. The team received key defensive contributions from Tyler Robertson and Jack Gordon. Jacob Sutoski and Braydon St. Denis combined to provide 4 and 2/3 innings of shut out relief pitching. In the championship game, the Bengals once again rallied and overcame an early deficit en route to a 13-4 win over the Aurora King Cobras. Jake Merante and Liam Green caused havoc on the base paths with some aggressive running. Aiden Hunt drove in a few important insurance runs in the sixth inning for Orangeville. Starting pitcher Cade Burton struck out 7 opposing batters in 4 innings of work. The coaching staff was extremely pleased with boys’ teamwork, sportsmanship and work ethic. The squad was buoyed by the presence of injured player Brody Deans. Despite suffering a season ending injury in July, Deans attended the recent tournament and supported his teammates throughout the weekend. The Orangeville Bengals hope to continue their winning ways as they go on to represent the YSBA in the upcoming provincial tournament to be held Labour Day weekend in Mississauga.
